Pumpkin Spice Kefir Smoothie

I’m always looking for new ways to spice things up for breakfast. So in honor of National Pumpkin Day, I decided to make a pumpkin smoothie. This smoothie is hearty, thick, creamy, easy to make, and full of fiber and protein. The star of the smoothie is pumpkin but the secret ingredients is the kefir that brings it all together. If you’re not familiar with kefir, its similar to yogurt but drinkable. Its fermented milk made from kefir grains, with the taste and tang of yogurt. The whole science part of it can get complicated, but just know that kefir is full of probiotics! This means that it contains plenty of “good” bacteria and yeasts that are necessary for the health of the gut. This can help with bloating, indigestion and possibly weight loss. It’s best to drink it in the morning so that it is the first thing in your body, which ensures that you’re getting the full benefit of the probiotics. But really you can drink it whenever you like.  I like to mix my kefir in smoothies rather than drinking it straight up but whatever you do, buy the plain flavor so you can skip the excess sugar.

It’s been said that kefir can be drunk by lactose-intolerant folks, but if you’re nervous about that you can try non-dairy kefir that can be found at Whole Foods Market or natural foods store.  This smoothie is complemented with the sweetness of bananas and peaches with a great oat taste topped off with traditional fall spice flavors.
